BoB Meeting, October 21

Check out what we’ve been up to so far this year in the media center!
A quick summary of the stats for August and September:
Reading Stats
- 456 books were checked out
- I got 29 requests for books to be added to the library collection
- 8th grade checked out the most books!
- All 3 grade levels took the Scholastic Reading Inventory to learn their Lexile reading level. We will continue to use Lexiles to help us choose great books to read.
Research Stats
- 95 classes visited the media center
- 6th grade visited for: library orientation and book check-out, orientation to research, and ecosystem research
- 7th grade visited for: library orientation and book check-out, Excel and Glogster math project, All About Me culture brochure
- 8th grade visited for: library orientation and book check-out, NC lighthouse research, regions of North Carolina research, word origin research
Special Events and Misc. Stats
- The very helpful librarians at the Stanford L Warren branch of the Durham County Library came to sign students up for Durham County Library cards. We had 31 students apply for new cards! Thanks very much to Heather and Nicole for coming to visit us! See me in the Media Center if you didn’t get a chance to apply for a card.

First Battle of the Books Meeting!

Today is our first meeting of the year, from 2:30-3:30 in the media center. I’m really excited to get started practicing with the team!
Today we will…
- Do an icebreaker/get to know each other activity
- Take a look at the BoB books
- Watch book trailers for the a few of the books:
- Moon Over Manifest book trailer
- A Single Shard book trailer
- Red Pyramid book trailer
- The Roar book trailer
- Play a game with the book titles
- And…eat some snacks : )
We will meet each Friday from 2:30 until 3:30, though February. See you there!

- EASE History – Over 600 photos and video clips covering American history
- History Channel – video clips arranged by topic
- CNN Video Almanac – Important news events from the 80′s and 90′s

- CNN Student News (excellent, 10-minute daily news program)

6th Grade Social Studies – Intro to Research

- New books! We have great new titles from authors like Rick Riordan, Sharon Draper, Walter Dean Myers, RL Stine, and lots more.
- Expanded graphic novel collection – be sure to let me know which comic and manga series you’d like to see in the media center.
- Technology projects in your classes, like multimedia videos, podcasts, blogs, and more.
- Battle of the Books team!
Stay tuned for more information during library orientation in a couple weeks! You will be visiting the media center in your language arts classes. I look forward to meeting our new students and welcoming our “old” students back! : )
